AMAZING bosses help set the overall tone, from the CEO down. The CEO actually knows her staff and interacts with staff often and always saying thank you. Other senior leads do the same. Their doors are always open and they listen and respond to employee needs. Employees overall are happy and committed making the environment a nice place to be. People work as a team. Staff ideas are encouraged and training and advancement is offered in many ways. Diversity is embraced and respected. Most important, they are true to their philosophy and mission. The people they serve are treated as PEOPLE and invited to be part of the company activities and governing. Leaders are not afraid to ask for criticism from employees and people served and even offer regular opportunities for employees to express any concerns and ideas. A weekly newsletter keeps you up to date on what's happening. Many employees have worked there for 20+ years but since the company is also growing, there is lots of new blood as well. Working your way up is strongly encouraged including tuition reimbursement and even in an house emerging leaders program. Pay is probably a little lower as a non-profit but the benefits (time-off, medical) and overall work environment and knowing you are making a difference in other people's lives far out weigh any monetary difference. Even the physical environment is well maintained and comfortable. They are always trying to find ways to let employees know they are valued - free coffee, fruit and granola bars available, food trucks brought to the office, celebrations for things like Pride week. I have recommended Advocates to many people as a great place to work!

EVERY company has some cons and every company has an occasional person that isn't a team player. Advocates is no different. As mentioned, it's a non-profit and reliant on government funding for many positions so pay isn't the same as a for profit company. However, work environment, good healthcare/401 plans, things like occasional onsite dental care and massages and knowing you are making a difference in the world I think outweigh a dollar more an hour at a high pressure company where you are only a cog in the company wheel. The main office is short on parking but senior leaders have worked hard to find temporary solutions (offsite parking with a shuttle and new office space), continue to search for permanent solutions and even shoulder the burden when needed by parking off site themselves.
